Over the last few weeks we have been inundated with phone calls from our regular customers. I’m thinking it has something to do with the children on their holidays from school and all the chocolate being consumed.
The phone calls ranged from the beloved dog eating three Easter eggs and throwing up on his way down the stairs, to the fish tank upturning and saturating the living room carpet and let us not forget the wine spills on the couch, these are to name but a few. Whatever the problem, it is always best to give us a call so as we can give our expert opinion.
Luckily we got to the house with the sick dog before the smells got too pungent – It was not for the faint hearted, but after a good deep clean and deodorising, the carpet was back to normal and gleaming. We advised the fish tank accident to “Pick up the fish”, then to air the room and dry out the carpet. When the carpet had dried the water marks were very visible, so we called out and using our machines which are at the height of technology we were able to banish those awful water marks and treat the carpet so as to avoid the growth of mould, mildew and to prevent rotting. As for the wine stains including any stains to your carpet we advise you to use our world famous spot remover. This is essential for any house with carpets, upholstery and rugs. How Pet Urine Removal Treatment (PURT) Works

The last few Chem-Dry Citywide articles have delved into the theory of how Pet Urine can damage carpets and other floor coverings. In this our latest edition we will explain how Chem-Dry Citywide’s Pet Urine Removal Treatment combats pet urine on surfaces within the home.
When P.U.R.T. contacts the source of the odour, it immediately begins a chemical reaction that destroys the urine odour. Outlined here in six steps I hope to explain in detail how P.U.R.T works so effectively.

1.The source and severity of the odour is determined. The carpet will then be rinsed and extracted with a hot water rinse to remove the bulk of the urine crystals.
2.In worst cases, the carpet is pulled back in the suspected areas to reveal the extent of the damage.
3.If necessary, the pad will be removed and replaced.
4.An odour blocking shellac may be applied to the sub-floor if determined necessary.
5.P.U.R.T. will then be applied heavily to the tack strip, the sub ﬂoor, the baseboards and the carpet backing. It is necessary to apply this product heavily enough to dampen all areas affected by the urine.
6.Over the next 24 to 36 hours, the ingredients in P.U.R.T. will react with the urine, and break down the odour causing components.

The follow up article on our special Pet Urine Removal Treatment Feature. In this part 2 special we will explain why pet urine to put it mildly “stinks” and explain the theory behind it.
There are two sources of odour associated with urine. The first comes from bacteria, that grows abundantly in dark warm places with a never ending food source – a pet can feed bacteria DAILY! This bacteria growth and breakdown of the urine creates amino acids. These complex organic compounds will often work deep into the fibres to a point of becoming part of the fibre. This can present a challenging situation. The waste materials and gases from the decomposing urine creates an unpleasant odour. When dried urine is remoistened, it gives off an ammonia gas and if smelled once it will not be forgotten.
The second source of odour is chemical odour that is present even when the bacterium has been killed. This explains the reason that more than sanitizing is necessary to neutralize odours from urine. Urine also presents additional odour problems when humidity is high. The salts and crystals that are left behind as the urine dries are hydrophilic and draw water to them. Dried urine is often easy to smell in the humid months because the salts attract the moisture, the moisture evaporates putting out a greater portion of odours ammonia gases. To effectively remove urine odours the front and back of the carpet must be treated. Spot cleaning will not remove any associated odours.

Pet Urine Removal Treatment PART 1

Unfortunately there are times when our little furry friends have “accidents”. We at ChemDry Citywide are forever being asked "Can you remove pet urine" and of course there are a lot of factors that determine whether this is possible or not. Broken into two articles we will try and explain how pet urine can cause permanent damage to your floors and fibres, also creating an unhealthy indoor environment
When urine is first deposited onto a floor or fabric, it has a pH level of about 5 or 6, which is on the acid side of the pH Scale. It is easier to remove when it is fresh. Once it dries into the surface it turns "alkaline" or to a high pH between 10 to 12 on the scale and it becomes more difficult to remove. The warm acid state of the urine offers a perfect breeding ground for bacteria which begins to flourish almost immediately. In this original acid state the urine begins to oxidize and react with the carpet to create a colour change which will become permanent if the urine is not removed immediately. Some of this colour change can be attributed to the strong ammonia that forms as the urine passes through bacterial and chemical change. If left for days or weeks, depending on the fabric or floor type, it will change the dye structure, therefore causing permanent staining. Even if the soluble deposits are removed, the damage to the dye structure may already be done.

Apply our world famous spot remover to your clean white cloth and blot (not rub) onto the spot. Repeat until the spot is gone, next rinse by wetting a cloth with water and blotting it onto the area then dry with a clean dry white cloth. If you do not have our spot remover substitute with soda water. Facts You Need To Know About Pet Urine In Your Carpeting:

Urine deposited on carpet does not stay there, it penetrates the ﬁbers and contaminates both the backing of the carpet and the ﬂooring material below the carpet. Often, without your knowing, pets will urinate continually in the same general location. Urine odours can permeate from the ﬂoor, be it cement or wood, from the tack strip, and even from the framework of the house behind the walls.

As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates but the urine crystals become even more concentrated and pungent. Simple cleaning will not remove this odour. Until recently, there was not a product available that was effective at removing urine odours.

When P.U.R.T. contacts the source of the odour, it immediately begins a chemical reaction that destroys the urine odour.

How P.U.R.T. Works

The source and severity of the odour are determined, then the carpet will be rinsed and extracted with a hot water rinse to remove the bulk of the urine crystals.

5 Easy Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Carpet
1. Check The Warranty. Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years. ALL STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL!

2. VACUUM, VACUUM, VACUUM! It is said that the three most important rules for maintaining carpet are vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the *fibre causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. as these items can cause a spot on the carpet.

3. Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned. Professional cleaning by a professional, firm should be done at least once every 6 to 12 months according to DuPont and major carpet manufacturers. Heavy traffic areas may need it more often. Manufacturers warranties require professional cleaning to retain texture retention warranties. Rule of thumb: Clean your carpet before it looks visibly soiled!

4. Remove Spots Immediately. Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily. Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by a certified professional cleaner! Many "over the counter" spotters leave too much soap residue that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return! We recommend Chem-Dry professional spot remover.

One of the biggest problems we come across while cleaning carpets are misinformed customers using everything from a drop of washing up liquid to carpet and car upholstery shampoos, the list is endless.

So why do we recommend that you abstain from such products, well you wouldn’t believe the amount of carpets and upholstery I’ve seen destroyed or discoloured over the past 8 years in the business. So many products promise amazing results for the customer and fail to deliver so whats the professional advice. So, what’s all the hullabaloo about HEPA filters? What do they do, and do you need one?
First of all, what does HEPA stand for? HEPA stands for “high efficiency particulate air.”
That’s all well and good, but what does that mean?
In a nutshell, a HEPA filter is a filter that traps even the finest of small particles—particles that your normal vacuum cleaner wouldn’t be able to trap, but would re-circulate back into the air instead.

For people with allergies or sensitivities, HEPA filters are good news! Filters that are labelled “true” or “absolute” HEPA filters must pass a test. That test shows that they are able to trap 99.97 percent of particles at .3 microns. Other filters may call themselves HEPA and may even look like HEPA filters; you can tell the difference between the two because true HEPA filters have a serial number and test results printed on the filter.

Since these filters are more expensive than standard vacuum cleaner filters, you’ll need to decide if the cost is worth it. Basically, if people with allergies live in your home, using a HEPA filter can significantly improve the quality of their life.
If family members in your home don’t have any sensitivities, a regular vacuum cleaner filter will most likely be good enough.
